Silymarin: Your Liver's Best Friend

Silymarin is a component from Silybum marianum, commonly known as the milk thistle.
It's a member of the aster plant family, including artichokes, which are known to be gallbladder and bile-friendly.Ā
Silymarin Benefits Silymarin is the most well-known compound in milk thistle. While it has many therapeutic applications, it is best used as a hepato-protective agent.
The complete mechanism is not yet wholly exhausted and understood, but here are some research-based properties of silymarin that make it a potent agent for the protection and repair of the liver:
Supports detoxification In general, flavonoids from plants have good antioxidant activity. Its effect on free radicals and enzyme systems makes silymarin stand out. Silymarin is effective against reactive oxygen species.
Aside from scavenging free radicals, it can increase the production and cellular content of glutathione and superoxide dismutase (SOD), two natural antioxidants in our bodies.Ā Ā

Repairs the liver The liver is a resilient organ that can repair itself with sufficient protection and care. Silymarin helps in the regeneration process by regulating nuclear expression, similar to the effect of steroids.
Even with toxins and pollutants in our bodies, silymarin can regulate membrane permeability and stability. All these actions combined can support the repair of damaged liver cells and expedite the restoration of normal liver functions.
Supports healthy inflammatory response The anti-inflammatory benefits of silymarin are closely tied to its antioxidant and liver-repairing properties.
NF-ĪŗB, a trigger of inflammatory and immune reactions, is said to be suppressed and inhibited by silymarin.
This makes it a potent natural agent for certain cancers like breast, ovarian, lung, skin, prostate, and liver carcinoma, as substantiated by various studies.
Adding Silymarin to Your Diet The milk thistle plant is known for its large purple flowering head and milky leaf veins, thus the name. Therapeutically speaking, the seeds and fruits are the most potent parts, but the roots, leaves, and stalks can also be used as ingredients for soups, stews, and salads.Ā Ā
if you find it challenging to locate and cook milk thistle, there are also numerous silymarin supplements on the market.Ā
Gallbladder-ND contains milk thistle extract, together with other herbs that boost gallbladder and liver health.

Anyone who has real understanding of health takes enzyme supplements with every meal they eat.
But that’s not most people.
Most people think enzyme supplements are for gas or heartburn; i.e., digestive symptoms only.
In fact, there are four conditions that need to be satisfied at every meal if you want to skip supplemental enzymes.
We all need supplemental live enzymes unless we:
  • Eat only raw food
  • Chew our food really slowly
  • Eat our meals in leisure (relaxed—not on the go, or over stressful conversations)
  • Have no digestive symptoms
Every cell in your body depends on enzymes.
All hormones, all vitamins and minerals require the catalyst of enzymes in order to work. Your immune system, your energy level, in fact all functions of the body depend on enzyme activity.
The body makes enzymes, but there is a limit to our body's manufacturing potential. Rather, we are meant to use external enzymes through our diet and eating habits.
But we don’t. We don’t eat mostly raw; we don’t chew our food and crucially, we don’t eat in a relaxed atmosphere.
An image added to the post.
Let’s look at these 4 criteria more closely:
1. We need to eat live foods which contain enzymes. Food that is cooked loses all enzyme activity. They are destroyed. Whenever you eat a meal of cooked foods, eat 1/3 raw with it, and/or supplement with live plant enzymes.
2. Chew food properly; eat at a leisurely pace. Enzymes are also secreted by the salivary glands and gulping your food reduces enzyme secretion by about 75% which means the food bypasses the step of pre-digestion in the mouth. This is where digestion is supposed to begin. When it hits the stomach without pre-digestion, you need a lot more help.
3. When you eat under duress, the body shuts down digestion. HCL is not secreted. Pepsin, pancreatic enzymes and bile are also not secreted. The food sits much longer in the small intestine, putrefying and causing reflux back up into the stomach. So step back. Set time aside for your meals. Relax.
4. When enzymes are plentiful and working optimally, there are no digestive symptoms—no gas, bloating or burping, no constipation or diarrhea, no heartburn, no reflux, no pain. If you have these symptoms, you still need the support of supplemental live enzymes, even if you do follow the above recommendations.
Every cell, every process in the body needs enzymes to function. That is why having sufficient enzyme activity can increase your energy levels, enhance your immune system, help with hormonal balance, reduce inflammation and more.
Taking enzymes can definitely boost your vitality.Ā

Did you know fatty liver could be related to gallstones?

Some of the factors that contribute to gallstones such as high cholesterol, insulin resistance and obesity, are also found concurrently in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
Facts we all know: High cholesterol causes fatty liver. Obesity causes fatty liver. CVD or cardiovascular disease creates a fatty liver. And gout results eventually in fatty liver. Right?
WRONG! It's actually the other way around, according to research. Fatty liver is at the root of all of those conditions. It causes them rather than the other way around.
What is Fatty Liver? Just like it sounds, fatty liver is a build up of fat within the liver which doesn't belong there. The fat in the liver causes inflammation and irritation which in turn causes scar tissue - a hardening of tissue cells called fibrosis.
When the fibrosis spreads it eventually leads to cirrhosis of the liver which interferes with and eventually stops it from functioning. Without a liver transplant, death results.
What are the symptoms? The most important symptom to take note of is NONE. You can have absolutely no symptoms at all, especially in the early stages – and some people remain symptom-free until the disease has progressed quite far.
Some of the symptoms could easily be overlooked, like fatigue, weakness and nausea. And remember, all symptoms do not need to be present, even when they do show up.
Symptoms of Early-Stage Fatty Liver Disease:
  • fatigue
  • weakness
  • nausea
  • loss of appetite
  • abdominal pain in the upper right side or upper center
Symptoms of Late-Stage Fatty Liver Disease:
  • spidering of capillaries - tiny blood vessels
  • yellowing or jaundice as bile backs up - skin and eyes
  • itching
  • edema - swelling in legs and abdomen
  • mental confusion
  • weight loss
  • enlarged liver which your doctor can feel on palpation

Here’s another commonly known ā€œFactā€ …
"Alcohol causes fatty liver." NOT WRONG! But ... sugar is just as much of a problem as alcohol for fatty liver disease, so much so that there is a term for that: NAFLD - or non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
And you might as well call that Sugar-Related Fatty Liver Disease or Carbohydrate-Caused Fatty Liver Disease.
Not so surprising, actually, considering that refined sugar, high fructose corn syrup and refined carbohydrates like bread, pasta, crackers, cookies, etc. all turn into fat.
And this is not new information. A study in 1949 (!!) found that mice fed sugar had more fat stored in their livers than mice fed alcohol.
So if you already have type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance, high triglycerides or metabolic syndrome, and even gout and CVD, just assume that you have a fatty liver already.
We all need to get with the program here and stop eating all those refined carbs!

Turning around a Fatty Liver...

Number 1. - Cut out the Sugar/Carbs - Cold Turkey Herbal Digestive Bitters taken after meals may help to control the carbohydrate cravings. But the truth is, the best way to cut out carb cravings is to force yourself to stop eating them. (Vegetables are also carbs, but I'm taking about the refined sugars listed above as well as sugar, honey, agave, etc.) Go cold turkey because even eating a little carbohydrate (sugar) increases the cravings. So, changing your diet is paramount.
Number 2. - Moderate Exercise It is really helpful for lowering high blood sugar levels which can cause both inflammation and fatty liver disease. But if you are too inflamed or too obese exercise, start with diet and with choline.
Number 3. - Take Choline - 500 mg Daily Although there are other supplements that are helpful such as resveratrol and Pro-EPA-Xtra omega 3s and betaine (which you are getting in your Betaine HCL and Beet Root already), by far the most well-researched supplement for fatty liver is choline. Studies from 1933 up to 2016 are proving how this single nutrient can help to reverse fatty liver disease.
